Tuesday is Election Day in Wichita, and voters are deciding whether to support a USD 259 bond. Polling places opened at 7 a.m. instead of 6 a.m. this year, and the polls will close at 7 p.m.

Early in-person voting for the Wichita USD 259 bond election begins Tuesday, Feb. 18. Voters can vote in the bond election at the Sedgwick County Election Office, 510 N. Main St., Suite 101, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. It continues every weekday until noon on Feb. 24.

In just over a month, Wichita voters will decide on a $450 million bond to improve and build new schools. It comes as there's a new organized effort against the bond.

It's too close to call. Preliminary results are in for Wichita Public Schools' $450 million bond proposal. Right now, only a handful of votes separate the yes' from the no's. But the no's have a slight edge.

The U.S. Department of Justice says it has completed its investigation of Wichita Public Schools USD 259 and found discrimination against students based on race and disabilities.

Voters can vote in the bond election at the Sedgwick County Election Office, 510 N. Main St., Suite 101, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. It continues every weekday until noon on Feb. 24.

The deputy commissioner with the Kansas State Department of Education said, more than roughly a third of school bond issues have failed in the past ten years, leaving school district leaders to go back to the drawing board.

Regardless of the vote, Superintendent Kelly Bielefeld reaffirmed Wednesday morning that four elementary schools would close. Those schools are L’Ouverture, OK, Pleasant Valley, and Woodland.
