Nueces County Jail receives tablets for inmates

Funding for a feasibility study for a new Nueces County Jail facility could come from the American Rescue Plan Act.

The sheriff's office received almost 400 tablets for inmates to use. NUCO Sheriff J.C. Hooper said the department will be in control of the devices and their systems are secure.

The Nueces County Jail was found non-compliant on three items during their most recent jail inspection.

The project had a price tag of $1.9 million. Change orders brought the project total to $2,440,316.86 and added 113 days to the completion date.

Nueces County Commissioners approve jail diversion program

The program started in august of 2018 and aims to not only decrease the population in the county jail but also lower hospitalizations and provide faster treatment.

The report lists three violations, including several inmates that were held in holding cells for more than 48 hours.

Nueces County Commissioners approved a jail diversion center at the Nueces Center for Mental Health and Intellectual Disabilities on Brownlee Boulevard near Ayers Street.

Nueces County Sheriff J.C. Hooper knew the county jail had issues when he was appointed sheriff in 2018 -- he just didn't know the extent.

In December 2022, for $200,000 Nueces County Sheriff J.C. Hooper contracted CGL Companies to assess the needs of the jail.

Nueces County is looking to rehabilitate juvenile offenders. The probation department was recently awarded a $900,236 grant every year for six years.
