The year was 1997 and the retail giant, Woolworths, Master of the Five and Dime, the inspiration behind all the others who have come since; Wal Mart, Target, Home Depot, Costco, was closing its last store in the United States. It was located on Broad Street in Globe, Arizona and had been a fixture of the community since 1916.

The first Woolworth store was opened by Frank Winfield Woolworth on February 22, 1879, as "Woolworth's Great Five Cent Store" in Utica, New York. Though it initially appeared to be successful, the store soon failed. When Woolworth searched for a new location, a friend suggested Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

The second store was opened more than 2 years later and after another 2 years, they opened a store in New Zealand. When the store was opened in Hobart, it meant Woolworths had a presence in every state of the country. Having achieved success with existing stores, the company decided to diversify its grocery offerings. Woolworths stores in the country has over a thousand locations.

On July 17, 1997, Woolworths closed its remaining department stores in the United States and changed its corporate name to Venator in 1998. In 1999, Venator sold and moved out of the Woolworth Building in New York City to offices on 34th Street.
