A dramatic opener for a single paragraph is often a very short sentence placed before the topic sentence. More often, dramatic openers are used to begin an entire report or essay. In these, another very short sentence may also be placed at the end of the essay or report to remind the reader of the opening. These would then frame the composition.

Throwing in a very short sentence (VSS, according to the IEW) once in a while is a great way to keep things engaging and grab your readers’ attention. It is also a good way to remember to vary your sentence lengths throughout the work, sometimes using long, winding sentences like this one and other times using very short sentences. Like this one.

The solution is variety. The occasional Very Short Sentence (VSS)—or sentence fragment—of three-to-five words can punch up a series of longer flowing sentences and make the reader sit up and take notice. Allowing students to use sentence fragments in writing is controversial among teachers.

#6 is a VSS. -Ly openers are pretty straightforward. You and add an –ly word to a sentence, then simply move it to the front of the sentence.
