With Shakespeare's Macbeth, Giuseppe Verdi maintained the traditional grand arias and great choruses of opera, but designed around a tightly paced drama.
Yet most opera lovers would agree that Macbeth is a masterpiece both great and ‘out of the ordinary’, unprecedented in Verdi’s art both for its psychological penetration and the refinement of its orchestral colouring: say, in the eerie, wailing cor anglais in the sleepwalking scene, or the evocative use of low clarinets.

A revision of Verdi's saw the composer make a number of changes. These included a ballet in the third act, extra music for Macbeth and Lady Macbeth in the first and third acts, and the change of Macbeth's original aria at the conclusion to a bombastic hymn.
