Upper Elementary Scoring Rubrics (Word) - This is the same rubric used to score local alternative assessments in grade 5 writing. Middle School Scoring Rubrics (Word) - This rubric is aligned to the 2017 English SOL. This rubric is different from the Grade 8 Writing Rubric used to score the Writing SOL tests that measure the 2010 English SOL.

Many Virginia 8th grade teachers don't get around to exposing students to a fraction of the released prompts. Since organization is key, my three-week writing boot camp in preparation for the assessment focuses on dissecting the prompts and allowing students to generate ideas based on the structure of the prompts.

I used this activity as a writing camp with Virginia 8th graders to prepare for the direct writing portion of the SOL test. We opened the doc in Google Drive and completed the outline for each prompt. The students were able to get exposure to each possible prompt and generate ideas for each.
