System bonding jumper. The system bonding jumper is a conductor, screw, or strap that bonds the metal parts of an SDS to the system neutral point [250.2]. The system bonding jumper provides a low-impedance fault current path to the power supply to facilitate the clearing of a ground fault by opening the circuit overcurrent device.
If the system bonding jumper isn’t properly installed (Photo 1 and Photo 2), an effective ground-fault current path will not be established. Table 250.66 of the 2011 NEC is used to size the system bonding jumper based on the size of the derived ungrounded circuit conductors supplied by the secondary of the transformer.
Article 250 Grounding and Bonding of the NEC is perhaps the most misinterpreted and misapplied in the Code. In a solidly grounded system, the system bonding jumper must be installed at the same location where grounding electrode conductor terminates to the neutral terminal of a separately derived system.
Use Table 250.102(C)(1) for sizing grounded conductors, main bonding jumper, system bonding jumper and supply-side bonding jumper for AC systems based on the size of the largest ungrounded conductor. Notice the requirement to use the notes found at the bottom of the table if ungrounded conductors are over 1,100 kcmil.
