The Twelve Traditions have been part of the spiritual foundation of NA as we know it from our very beginnings. The principles arose out of experience: practical lessons learned from problems faced early in the development of our predecessor, Alcoholics Anonymous.

The Twelve Traditions of NA are not negotiable. They are the guidelines that keep our Fellowship alive and free. By following these guidelines in our dealings with others, and society at large, we avoid many problems. That is not to say that our Traditions eliminate all problems.

A Narcotics Anonymous group is any group that meets regularly, at a specified place and time, for the purpose of recovery, provided that it follows the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of Narcotics Anonymous. In keeping with the spiritual nature of Narcotics Anonymous, our structure should always be one of service, never of government. Within the context of the Twelve Concepts, as a body, this concept serves much the same function as Tradition Twelve in the context of the traditions.
