The paper trimmed away is called the ‘bleed.’ We print all book files with a bleed margin of 0.125 in/3.175 mm on all sides so we can trim the pages to a uniform size.

Lulu.com apparently strongly suggests you use their own template for Word documents--even if you're using the default 8.5 x 11.
