I have used the ALT key to insert special characters for years and suddenly they are inserting crazy characters for me. For example, ALT-150 gives me a little sun character instead of an en dash. ALT-134 gives a lower case “a” with a little circle above it instead of a daggar. ALT-167 gives degree symbol instead of section mark.

To get around this keyboard limitation, keyboard shortcuts were set up in Microsoft’s Windows operating system, so that by pressing the Alt key followed by a unique sequence of number keys, a special character can be quickly inserted. Hence the terms Alt codes or Alt key codes.

How to type an Alt Symbol on keyboard? For example, let's type a degree symbol by using its Alt Code value on the keyboard. Make sure you switch on the NumLock, press and hold down the Alt key, type the Alt Code value of the degree symbol 0176 on the numeric pad, release the Alt key and you got a ° degree symbol.

There are 6 different Shift states on your keyboard. First one is when you type with only 1 key pressed. Second one is when you also press Shift key to make capital letters and other signs (like dollar "$" sign), than you get with only 1 key pressd down (you would have typed "4" instead). Other 4 shift states are usually kept unassigned - they don't make any symbols.
