While there is not a national requirement for licensure for American Sign Language Interpreters practicing in the United States, many individual states have the requirement for licensure, and/or other unique provisions. What are the licensure/certification rules in my state?

To be eligible for Licensure by Endorsement you must meet the following requirements: Must be currently licensed (i.e., fully certified or licensed) by your state's licensing authority. Must be in good standing with your state's licensing authority. Must be currently licensed or certified as a Basic or Master level interpreter.

The Qualified Interpreter (QI) Program certifies qualified American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters for the Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing. The QI Program processes applications for sign language interpreters such as: Test of English Proficiency (TEP) & Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) exams, initial certification, and renewals.
