Here is a picture to show you how it fits over my baseboard. My existing baseboard is really narrow, not anywhere near as wide as the sample the manufacturer shows. It does fit right over the top beautifully. I ordered one 8ft. piece for this project. You can see here how the back of the molding is carved out to fit right over my existing molding.

When you pull the baseboard away from the wall there will most likely be nails that are sticking out of the baseboard, as well as out of the wall. The nails in the old baseboard are no problem as long as you handle the wood carefully. But the nails remaining in the wall need to be removed before you can eventually add the new baseboard.

If the new flooring is being installed under the existing base, just rip the old base out. Any decent lumber yard (or big box) should have a nice selection of baseboards in various widths in either paint or stain grade.
