Straight lines can be constrained to be either vertical or horizontal by holding down the shift key. Line lengths recorded using the Measure command are given in pixels unless Set Scale has been used to perform spatial calibration. Type command-f (Fill) and command-1 (Measure) to quickly draw and measure the length of a line selection.

Each click will define a new line segment. Double click when finished, or click in the small box at the starting point. The points that define a segmented line selection can be moved or deleted, and new points can be added. Length and line angle are displayed in the status bar during drawing (see Toggling Calibrated Units↑).

This is always true in ImageJ for tools showing a small red arrow at the bottom right of the tool button. Right-clicking on the tool shows a menu with the similar available tools. Select the straight line tool and draw a line by clicking anywhere on the image and moving the mouse without releasing the mouse button until you want to end your line.

Hi @Rashmi. It seems to be fine on my version of ImageJ (1.53k), what version are you using and what operating system? I’ve put a gif to show the behaviour of the line on my workstation, first I’m drawing a selection without holding shift and then after the pause I’m clicking the shift key which only allows me to draw at angles, 0, 45, 90, etc.
