Ok, so when I say built, I had a little help from Ikea. I’m sure you all have seen Billy Bookcase hacks before on Pinterest. I’ve always wanted to try it and I was scared, but it really is as easy as it looks. Our ceilings are 9 ft tall so I grabbed 2 of the original Billy bookcases and 4 of the extensions packs.
I am so excited to share our IKEA BILLY bookcase hack. I fell in love with the bookcases The Makerista shared. They were gorgeous! I showed it to my husband and he agreed that they would look great in my soon to be office (although, I am pretty sure he wasn’t even aware at the time that I was transforming the formal living room into my office.)
To mount the bookcases to the wall I located the wall studs and secured four 2x4s to the wall horizontally. Because we were working with a wall (and floors… and ceiling) that are over 100 years old- it was necessary to use shims to bring the 2×4’s to level on the wall. Once level, the bookcases were secured to the 2x4s using small L brackets.

So we got found some ideas and instructions on You Tube. Made the safety handles out of galvanised plumbing tubing painted black, and purchased the ladder hardware from Amazon.
