Sometimes I’ll encounter a book (usually an oldish one) with an uncut page or two. (FYI, multiple book pages are printed on a large sheet, then folded into a little bundle called a signature; all the signatures are bound together in sequence, then three of the four sides of the pile are trimmed to cut away the top, bottom and right-side folds. If a fold lands inside the trim edge it stays ...
Here’s my advice for slicing uncut pages. It’s typical for four pages to be folded together, one pair within another. Only cut one pair at a time, because if your knife has to slice through two sheets at once, it’s likely to tear something. In most cases you will be cutting on the top, but sometimes the pages are also joined on the right ...

'Uncut pages', or simply 'uncut', traditionally refers to a book which has not been trimmed by rebinding. Prior to the mid-nineteenth century publishers often sold books with a paper or cloth binding intended to be temporary. The purchaser of the book would then make arrangements with a binder to have the book cut and suitably bound, typically ...
After recently learning about "unopened" books I decided to record a guide on how to open their pages. For more information visit http://topshelfbookclub.com
The correct terminology would be 'unopened', uncut just means that it's untrimmed. So you would say that the bolts are unopened, the book untrimmed and the deckles intact. I always use a letter opener. Never realised this could be a problem, but it seems useful.
Uncut Pages; Uncut Pages. When a book arrives in the libraries with pages uncut, preservation staff should cut the pages. This is done either with a hydraulic cutter or by holding the book partially open, and with either a metal letter opener or bone folder, cutting the top and fore edges with very short strokes, taking care not to saw back and ...
However, you should be sure to distinguish between “untrimmed” and “uncut” pages—the latter refers to a book made up of a folded leaf that has not been cut. Accordingly, all of the pages of an “uncut” book cannot be opened. In many descriptions, this is referred to as an “unopened” book. When it comes to page styling and ...
uncut. 2. and. uncut: a book is said to be uncut if the edges of the paper have not been cut with the plough or guillotine. Cf. unopened. 3. The difference between “unopened” and “uncut” is significant for the history of reading: unopened leaves are a pretty good indication that a book wasn’t read when it was new.
On Uncut Pages . I couple years ago I bought a book on Ebay from 1882. I’m finally getting around to reading it (I have a long backlog of books in my reading list) and I discovered about 70% of it has uncut pages. As a personal rule, I don’t annotate or mark antique books. But I’ve never had a book with uncut pages before, and although I ...
Sometimes you can even find old books with a few uncut pages, indicating those pages were never actually read. An old-fashioned untrimmed book will present an unkempt fore edge, consisting of ragged deckle edges of the original handmade sheet of paper, as well as pages that were manually cut open by the reader with a paper knife. Grab & go!
Old books were sometimes sold with uncut pages that the recipient would then have to open themselves. The edges of leaves can be rough and uneven in books where the leaves have been cut open by hand. All the gatherings are bound to make a text block, a single sheet is folded to make a front endpaper and another single sheet is folded to make a ...
