I finished the door by using wood filler in all of the nail holes, sanding the wood filler smooth, and then priming the molding. Then I did some spot caulking to fill in any cracks where the molding didn’t sit perfectly flush against the door. And then I gave the entire door and door facing a new coat of paint (Behr Polar Bear).
Loved this idea. Started it. Got the door ready to paint. Started removing the door casing and am so discouraged. Our house was built in 1971. I scored the casing but it still ripped the frame and once the casing was removed, there is an open ridge under it! UGH!!! So want this to work. I don’t want to buy new doors right now.
It’s the little things. Those tedious home projects. The trim work. The hardware. The flat panel old brown doors. I can’t believe what a difference tackling those old brown ugly flat panel doors made to this complete home makeover. It elevated the space completely and gave it a whole fresh new look.
The final step in this flat panel door makeover is to caulk any gaps and paint the entire front of your doors. My doors were originally painted with oil-based paint so I used Benjamin Moore’s Advance. This paint can be used over oil-based paint yet it cleans up like latex paint. Just be aware that it has a long dry time between coats.
Then, add box trim, creating four different rectangles on the door. This immediately gives the door texture and dimension, as well as the timeless classic vintage feel of a much older door. To attach the trim or molding to the door, use small brad nails or a strong adhesive like wood glue or gorilla glue to secure the box trim in place.
The last step to updating your flat panel doors, is to replace the door knob and hinges! This is another really easy way to take the doors to the next level! There’s a wide range of door knobs out there with prices from $20 each to over $100 each.
With the trim added, my doors are now about 1 7/8 and all.of th replacement knobs i see on Amazon or in hardware stores say they fit "1 3/8" to 1 3/4" thick doors." Wad that the size you bought and were still able to fit the thicker door? I'm worried I'll buy all new hands (not cheap!) and not be able to fit them to the door. :(Delete
This will give you the length for the top and bottom pieces of trim. You need four (4) trim pieces per side for the door you measured. Top side pieces (above the door knob): Measure the door knob faceplate (it’s the metal plate on the side where your door latches closed). Subtract this measurement from 6”.
I replaced everything with craftsman style doors and built matching headers. We had a few original flat panel doors (from the 70s!) but they were in really bad shape. Maybe in my next house, if it has flat doors in good shape, I’ll do this (but there is no current plan for a next house, lol). Stop by and see how I did my craftsman style doors.

After painting the door it was time to work my magic and transform a flat door into a masterpiece. Supplies for making a flat door into a paneled door •door •decorative trim •tape measure •T-square or carpenters square •pencil (I used a dry erase marker for the first door, not the best idea) •miter box with saw (or just a saw if you're good like that) •liquid nails, or other ...
Step 4: Install Trim to the Door. I used my brad nailer to attach the trim to the door. I've also seen this done with liquid nails where they tape the trim on the door while the adhesive is drying. Both options work! I attached the top piece first then the first side, the second side, and lastly bottom.
The hardest part was rehanging the doors by myself! It was a bit of a balancing act but doable. I used construction adhesive and brads to hold the moulding in place, then caulked, painted and added new hinges and knobs. ... All of the doors to the rooms I hauled to the garage. I laid them flat on the floor when adding the trim. Then stood them ...
