While many people know that Christopher Columbus "discovered" the Caribbean, what most folks don't know is that the Caribbean Islands had a storied history well before Columbus' arrival. In fact, the first people to live on the Caribbean Islands in about 5000 B.C. were tribes of people called the Arawaks and Caribs.
The Dutch Caribbean refers to countries like Aruba and Curacao. Suriname is also a major Dutch territory in the region, but like Guyana, it is located in South America. The early Dutch colonisers in the Caribbean during the 17th century were more interested in trade and created commercial bases to trade with other European settlers in the region.
Of the five largest islands in the Caribbean, all of which were Spanish in the 16th century, Jamaica has been lost to Britain in 1655. Trinidad has been ceded to Britain by the treaty of Amiens in 1802. And both halves of Hispaniola have now claimed their independence. But the largest island of all, Cuba, is Spanish. So is Puerto Rico.
