In the end of Order of Phoenix, Prof. McGonagall gives Luna, Harry, Neville, Ron, and Hermione 50 points each and the "House point meter" immediately refills itself. If the meter would immediately refill itself when a teacher gives a command, what stops a teacher from giving their House points now and then, which isn't technically wrong.
So I’m currently rereading Harry Potter (for the 5837937th time) and I’ve always been confused by quidditch and house points. For example in Philosophers stone they talk about how Griffindor loses all the house points Harry gained from quidditch after Mcgonogall catches him and hermione after the Norbert drop off.
Is it just me, or did the value of house points increase significantly after the first book? In the sorcerer's stone, Harry and Ron save Hermione from a troll in the dungeons. Harry and Ron each earn just 5 points, and Hermione loses 5, so for saving her life, Gryffindor only gains 5 points.
