Macbeth (Italian pronunciation: [ˈmakbet; makˈbɛt]) [1] is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi, with an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave and additions by Andrea Maffei, based on William Shakespeare 's play of the same name.

Yet most opera lovers would agree that Macbeth is a masterpiece both great and ‘out of the ordinary’, unprecedented in Verdi’s art both for its psychological penetration and the refinement of its orchestral colouring: say, in the eerie, wailing cor anglais in the sleepwalking scene, or the evocative use of low clarinets.

There were some notable differences between the Shakespeare play and the Verdi opera. The three witches became a chorus of witches in the opera, for example, while the revised version ended with a bombastic choral ending provided by celebratory bards and various others.
