If it's visible in a Finder window or the File> Open dialog you didn't hide the file, you hid the Excel window*. [That may seem pedantic but there is a major distinction.] Once a window is Hidden it remains Hidden as long as the program is running until you Unhide it. Attempting to open the file does no good because the file already is open.
