What is Referencing? Referencing is a method used to identify where you have obtained information and ideas from for your assignments. The American Psychological Association (APA) provides a standardised format that ensures those references are accurate, complete and useful to the reader. APA requires two elements: an in-text citation and a reference list.
APA 6th edition references consist of two parts: in-text citations and reference list entries. When citing APA 6th edition references in-text citations, follow the author-date method of in-text citation, for example: (Cooper, 2015). References should always begin on a new page, with the heading “References” centered at the top.
An APA in-text citation consists of the author's last name and year of publication, for example: (Smith, 2020). Be mindful about punctuation.
