Sir Alistair Allan Horne CBE FRSL (9 November 1925 – 25 May 2017) [8] was a British historian and academic best known for his works about armed conflicts involving 19th- and 20th-century France, including his classic about the Algerian War, A Savage War of Peace.A former spy and journalist, Horne wrote more than 20 books on travel, history, and biography.

He is a fellow at St. Anthony’s College, Oxford, and lives in Oxfordshire.

Alistair Horne tells the story well, but thoroughly – this is a very dense book and I don't know that it could really be considered general interest. There are a few updates in it, but most of the writing is from 1977, and I'm curious to know what historical sources have become available since then, especially on the Algerian side.

I bought Alistair Horne’s book as research for a novel I was writing that touched, tangentially, on the war for Algerian independence 1954-1962 and the ‘pied noir’ community of a million white French colonists who ruled ten times that number of Algerians and who treated them poorly in the extreme.
