The History The Alabama Shakespeare Festival originated in modest circumstances, with its inaugural performance in 1972 in a high school auditorium in Anniston, Alabama. This marked the inception of the summer theater project, a venture that propelled the theater to national acclaim despite facing financial constraints.
As a beloved Alabama arts institution, ASF broadens the cultural identity of the South by producing classics, Shakespeare, contemporary plays, musicals, theatre for young audiences, and exciting new works. We offer student matinees (known as SchoolFest), backstage tours, educational programming (including acting classes and summer camps), and more!
