La Géométrie, a short appendix that appeared in Descartes’ famous Discourse on the Method, laid the foundations of analytic geometry. By introducing the notion of a coordinate system, Descartes built a bridge between geometry and algebra that would later make it possible to develop calculus and other important areas of math.
