Privacy Policy

Mavii always attempts to minimize or simply not collect or share personal information at all whenever possible. That is our privacy policy TL;DR. There are exceptions, and you should continue reading to understand how and why.

What do we mean by "personal information?"

For us, "personal information" means information which either directly identifies you (like your name, email address, or billing information) or can be reasonably linked or combined to identify you (like an account identification number or IP address). We'll always tell you what personal information we're collecting from you.

How do we learn information about you?

We learn information about you when:

  • you give it to us directly (e.g., you enter a search phrase);
  • we collect it automatically through our products and services (e.g., when your Mavii browser extension checks with us to see if its content is up to date);
  • someone else tells us information about you (e.g., when you sign in with a Google account); or
  • when we try and understand more about you based on information you've given to us (e.g., when we use your IP address to approximate your city and country in order to provide better results to you).

What do we do with your information once we have it?

When you give us information, we will use it in the ways for which you've given us permission. Generally, we use your information to help us provide and improve our products and services for you. Specifically, we use it to supply you with great answers to your search queries. We do not share your personally identifiable information with anyone else.

For users in the EU, EEA, Switzerland, and California: see here for more information.

When do we share your information with others?

When we have asked and received your permission to share it.

  • For processing or providing products and services to you, but only if we can do so in way where personally identifying information is removed before hand. We never share your IP address or a unique identifier with a 3rd party service.
  • When the law requires it. We follow the law whenever we receive requests about you from a government or related to a lawsuit. We'll notify you when we're asked to hand over your personal information in this way unless we're legally prohibited from doing so. When we receive requests like this, we'll only release your personal information if we have a good faith belief that the law requires us to do so. Nothing in this policy is intended to limit any legal defenses or objections that you may have to a third party's request to disclose your information.
  • When we believe it is necessary to prevent harm to you or someone else. We will only share your information in this way if we have a good faith belief that it is reasonably necessary to protect the rights, property or safety of you, our other users, XLB Systems or the public.
  • If our organizational structure or status changes (if we undergo a restructuring, are acquired, or go bankrupt) we may pass your information to a successor or affiliate.

How do we store and protect your personal information?

First we minimize the amount of information we store about you. For the info we do store in order to provide the service, we are committed to protecting your personal information once we have it. We implement physical, business and technical security measures. Despite our efforts, if we learn of a security breach, we'll notify you so that you can take appropriate protective steps.

We also don't want your personal information for any longer than we need it, so we only keep it long enough to do what we collected it for. Once we don't need it, we take steps to destroy it unless we are required by law to keep it longer.

What if we change this privacy policy or any of our privacy notices?

We may need to change this policy and our notices. The updates will be posted online. If the changes are substantive, we will announce the update through Mavii's usual channels for such announcements such as blog posts and forums. Your continued use of the product or service after the effective date of such changes constitutes your acceptance of such changes. To make your review more convenient, we will post an effective date at the top of the page.

Types of information Mavii collects to operate the service:

  • Interaction data: Your browser and the Mavii mobile app send data about your interactions with Mavii to us (such as number of searches performed; performance metrics; and session length). This information is not tied to you specifically.
  • Technical data: Mavii mobile apps send data about their version and language; device type and operating system; basic information about crashes and errors; outcome of automated processes like updates, and activation to us. When Mavii sends data to us, your IP address is temporarily collected as part of our server logs but is not permanently stored or associated with a specific report. The stored technical data is not tied to you specifically.
  • Search data: We receive data about how you engage with search in Mavii as well as the search terms themselves. We don't associate this data with a specific user or store the resulting search queries in our system in a personally identifiable way. Your search history is yours, not ours. We do randomly sample a subset of search queries in order to improve the service but that data is never tied to you specifically. We do not store IP addresses or unique user-agent strings associated with search queries. We use aggregate, non-personal search data to improve things like misspellings or how to best answer a type of search. You should know that we do send search queries to a suggestions provider to help you discover common phrases other people have searched for and to improve your search experience and we do rely on the private search API of Bing to provide organic search results. Again, personally identifying information such as your IP address and user-agent string are removed before data is passed from Mavii to a suggestions or search provider.
  • Location data: We use your IP address to establish the approximate city and country you are located in order to provide you with relevant search results. We also use this data for security purposes to send you email alerts if we detect suspicious activity, such as account logins from other locations.
  • Account data: We collect and store your email address so you can sign in and access the service. We do not keep a search history associated to your account. We may use this email address to send periodic messages to help you get the most from your Mavii account. We may also send you important account information such as updates to legal or privacy terms, or security messages like login links, password resets, email verification, and linked devices.
